Why is my name taken?
WoW Forever uses two names per character. Blizzard’s rules make the full combination unique within a region, so another player can use the same first name as long as their second name is different.
The error appears when the exact combination is already taken — by a character someone created, or by a name reserved during the October 27–November 3 reservation window.
How to get a name that works
- Keep the first name you want and change the second name. This is usually enough, because the second name is where duplicates are rare.
- Avoid the most obvious lore names and pairings. Combinations like famous characters plus a common surname disappear first.
- Reserve early. If you own the Heroic Pack or higher, name reservation opens on October 27, first come, first served.
- Check the naming rules. Names that break Blizzard’s naming policy are refused with a different message; change the spelling rather than the order.
Can I hide my second name?
Blizzard says players can choose how the second name is displayed. The exact setting will be added here once the full game is available to test.
Before you create your character
Pick your ruleset with your friends first — names are reserved per character, and you cannot group across rulesets. Then choose a class and plan its talents.
